Of course, it matters. It is basically an indiction of your creditworthiness (most people don’t have savings) and your ability to handle your money. On the contrary, if you had no money in the bank or were overdrawn, then you would be a bigger credit risk.
Often, the amount you have in the bank gets "added" to your net worth and assets.
Even on my application for FAFSA student aid, it asks my checking account balance and included that into my income!
